My Victorian Images (1975)
Play and seriousness
I first saw Lews Caroll’s photographs in the early 1970’s. I was fascinated by the children’s facial expressions and poses, especially since they had to sit perfectly still for at least a minute fo the photograph to be taken. My own material was right there; my children, their friend and a big chest of dressing-up clothes at the top of the stairs. That chest has always been central to childen’s games in our house, both back in the 1970’s and with my own grandchildren.
